The NNAS Bronze Award is a practical, hands-on course designed for those with little or no navigation experience. Whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks, or well-defined routes, this course will give you the skills to navigate independently.
Over two days, you will build confidence navigating in a range of environments, including open countryside, hills, and woodland. These varied locations provide strong opportunities to apply what you learn in real situations. The areas used are easily accessible from London and can be reached by public transport.
During the course, you will:
Learn how to understand different types of maps, scales, and grid references
Build confidence in orientating your map using features and a compass
Make sense of contours and how they relate to the ground around you
Estimate distances and walking times more accurately
Plan and follow your own routes using simple navigation techniques
Understand how to use a mobile phone as a back-up navigation tool
Learn your rights and responsibilities in the countryside, including the Countryside Code
Develop awareness of equipment, safety, and emergency procedures
The course runs over two full days, typically from 09:00 to 16:00, based in Wendover, Buckinghamshire. It is non-residential, and the maximum group size is kept small with a ratio of 1:8 to ensure you get plenty of support.
Each morning, you will meet at a local café where you can get a drink or breakfast before heading out. Most of the day will be spent outdoors, putting your skills into practice.
You will need to bring a small rucksack with lunch, water, and spare clothing. A full kit list will be provided after booking.
For navigation, a compass (such as a Silva Expedition 4) and the OS Explorer 181 map (Chiltern Hills North) are recommended. If you do not already have these, that is not a problem, you can borrow both for the course.
Your course fee includes use of maps and compasses if required, along with assessment and certification upon successful completion.
For full details of the Bronze Navigator syllabus, please refer to the NNAS website.
By completing the award, you will gain a nationally recognised qualification accredited at SCQF Level 4, with 2 credit points awarded.
This 2-day NNAS Silver Award is perfect for beginners and intermediates. The course develops those skills provided at Bronze level and teaches you how to become more accurate with your navigation skills and how to navigate in a more open environment, such as moors, hills and mountains. The Silver also introduces navigation in a low visibility situation (at night, in fog, etc.) It is a very practical, enjoyable and hands-on weekend which will provide you with all those necessary skills you need to plan walks, take the lead and explore. It is also a very useful course if working on or taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Scouts, Guides, Cadets and anybody working towards a Mountain Training leader qualification.
